Abstract
Laboratory studies have been undertaken in an attempt to determine the effect that temperature, noise level, and illumination have on “comfortableness”. The studies were undertaken in Japan in the early 1980s using Japanese students, with each student undertaking repeated tests as each parameter was varied. This paper reviews the results of three such experiments, and shows that “uncomfortableness” can be expressed by the addition of a weighted score for each parameter. Noise is shown to be significantly less important in this rating than temperature.
