The ASNZ is the home of New Zealand acoustics
The Acoustical Society of New Zealand (ASNZ) is an Incorporated Society for professionals working in acoustics, as well as anyone with an active interest in acoustics. It was founded in September 1982.
Our primary objectives are to create learning opportunities and events for acousticians to connect and learn from one another. We hold regular seminars and branch meetings in each major centre around Aotearoa New Zealand, and we invite presentations from experts on topics of current acoustical interest.
We offer multiple membership grades, providing for students, professionals (both in their early-mid career, and highly experienced) and Fellowships, which are awarded to those people who have distinguished themselves in their careers and/or with their contributions to the Society. Membership enquiries are welcome at any time. Details are provided in the Membership section.
We also offer funding opportunities for our members to attend local and international conferences, and prizes for tertiary students studying acoustics.
Our Society journal, New Zealand Acoustics, is delivered free of charge to all membership grades, and a library of previous issues and articles is available for download from the Publications & Events section.

The Acoustical Society of New Zealand recommends the SoundPrint app for finding quiet cafes and restaurants, where conversations can be held easily and enjoyably. This new technology-based system replaces the previously published Cafe and Restaurant Rating Index (CRAI). It utilises a phone’s microphone as a sound level meter to assist in rating the ambient noise and speech intelligibility of a venue. Users can search a large database of rated venues across Aotearoa, displaying nearby results conveniently on a map or in a list.
A curated list of acoustic quality ratings for food and beverage venues can also be found in the New Zealand Acoustics Journal. Venue ratings can be viewed by city and suburb through the SoundPrint website:
Keep an eye out for the annual ‘SoundPrint – Find Your Quiet Place Challenge’.
Join the mission to promote hearing health awareness in your community! Each contribution is invaluable and enables SoundPrint to advocate for safe noise levels, help communities find quieter places, and protect the public’s hearing health.
