Acoustical Society of New Zealand

Conference Fund

The object of the ASNZ is to promote the science and practice of acoustics in all its branches”. One of the best ways we can do this is to support our members who wish to attend acoustic symposia – particularly if they are presenting a paper on research they have conducted.

ASNZ has established a fund of up to $5,000 NZD per annum, which can be allocated at the ASNZ Council’s discretion. It is available to all who hold an ASNZ membership (Members, Affiliates and Fellows), but preference will be given to student applications, and those living full-time in New Zealand.

The fund is intended as a contribution towards conference costs, rather than paying them in full.

The amount for each application will be capped as follows:

  • $500 NZD for conferences held in New Zealand (including our own biannual conferences)
  • $1,500 NZD for conferences held overseas

Successful applicants for overseas conferences may be required by the ASNZ Council to represent the Society at official functions in person such as Annual General Meetings. Note that if a successful applicant does not attend the conference in due course, any received funds are to be repaid to the ASNZ.

There are two funding rounds per year, as follows:

  • 15 May deadline for conferences held between July and December of the same year. Recipients will be announced by 30 May
  • 30 September deadline for conferences held between January and June the following year. Recipients will be announced by 31 October

Acoustical Society of New Zealand Student Prizes

The Acoustic Society of New Zealand (ASNZ) wishes to award student prizes related to work in acoustics. It has established funds of up to $2500 per year for this purpose. These prizes are open to students studying at all tertiary institutes within New Zealand. These awards should be related to acoustic work performed either wholly or partially in the last 12 months as part of a tertiary degree. There are two categories:

  • Outstanding Performance in an Undergraduate Student Project Related to Acoustics

The prize amount is:

$250 for an individual student or

$500 for a student group (e.g. $250 per student for a group of two).

More than one prize could be awarded per tertiary institute. Academics should email the ASNZ representative, Michael Kingan (m.kingan@auckland.ac.nz), that they intend to nominate a student or group for this award before the submission deadline. An ASNZ representative will check the work to ensure it is suitable. This could be by an ASNZ representative attending a presentation or reviewing work performed such as a final report.

  •  An Outstanding Thesis or Conference/Journal Paper Related to Acoustics

The prize amount is $500. The work does not need to be published. However, it should have been published or the work performed within the last year. Preference will be given to works that are considered “acoustics” related works as opposed to say works that only include some aspects of acoustics. We are encouraging self-nomination by students or supervisors. To apply, please email the ASNZ representative, Michael Kingan (m.kingan@auckland.ac.nz), and attach the thesis/journal/conference paper before the due date.

The deadline for submissions is 1 October.

Following the closing date, representatives of the ASNZ Council will review applications and sort out judging, awards and certificates.
